3 video essays: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Noha/Kai van Hasselt produced three video essays on Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Lelystad as The Good, The Bad and the Ugly for the Rijksbouwmeester November 2016.

Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Lelystad each have their own spatial qualities. During the Rijksbouwmeester Conference on November 1st 2016 the aspect of shared spaces of the three cities was discussed. A common element in the three visual essays is the music. The Dutch composer Anthony Fiumara created a solo for saxophonist Tom Sanderman, The River Beneath Us. It is an elegant and vulnerable piece, in the tradition of minimal, repetitive music of Reich and Adams. It connects the videos and gives rhythm to the images. Watch the three films here:

Photographers Thomas Schlijper, Otto Snoek and Eva van ’t Loo offer a glimpse of the three respective cities. Furthermore video images from aerial photographer Marco van Middelkoop/ Aerostock show the cities from the air. Together they give a spatial overview and insight into the very different built up of the three cities and the questions that arise from the differences.
